MEGA Academy Meet Sunday May 6, 2012

This weekend is an awesome opportunity for kids to show off the skills they have been practicing, and possibly advance to the next level!!

Instead of only a mobility session, where students are ready to move up, and have mastered all the routines for their level, we are offering a demo meet as well.  The demo meet allows any gymnast in level 1 or above to participate and have friends and family see the skills they have!

Sign up this week and make sure to ask you child’s coach which session they should be in. There is also an option to purchase a new leotard that can be worn during the meet, that comes in many awesome colors!

Mobility Sessions:      130pm   and   330pm

Demo Sessions:        1000am  and  1130am

Throughout the summer, MEGA is hosting weekly Junior Olympic Summer Camps for children ages 4 and up.  We have many children progressing in their gymnastics skills during the week long program while having fun! The qualified gymnastics coaches consist of our year round gymnastics coaches as well as a selected group of MEGA team members.  Every Friday the gymnasts can showcase the skills they have learned throughout the week to friends and family at our ”Olympic Friday.”

First Place Level 5 State Champion: Kamryn Crowley

Kamryn started Gymnastics in September 2008 at G-Force Gymnastics in Redding, CA with Coaches Tarro and Julie.  She previously had done ballet for 4 years in Chico, CA but it wasn’t what she loved.  We moved to Redding, CA in August of 2008 and thought she should try something different since she didn’t love Ballet. She mentioned Gymnastics.  We enrolled her right away for 2 nights a week and it was her calling and passion.  She practiced every chance she could get and went to open gym every Saturday for 3 hours.  Our living room quickly became a mini gym for cartwheels and roundoffs :)  Kamryn moved up to Team within a few months of being in gymnastics.  Her coaches said she has the body, build and passion to someday be an Olympian.  That is her ultimate goal, to someday be the next Shawn Johnson.  They also said she listened well and paid close attention to what she was learning to better her skills.

Her first year on Team for 2009/2010 at competitions was nerve racking and she did okay.  She loved it still and wanted to be the best she could be. She continued to practice more and more to be much better at the next season.  We moved to Windsor, CA in November 2010 and there was no tumbling gym in our area.  I know how much she wants to continue being a gymnast, so we decided to drive to MEGA twice a week, 50 minutes each way so she could continue on her journey to be an Olympian.   She adjusted well with the new gym and made new friends.  This season of competing she has taken first place ALL season on both Trampoline and Double Mini.  At States she took 1st on Trampoline, 2nd on Double Mini and 3rd on Tumbling.  We are attending Regionals and she hopes to “sweep” with Trampoline and take 1st place again.  She hopes to do as well next season and hopes to get the chance to go to Nationals and compete next year.

She also started Artistic at MEGA for the first time; She has adapted well also in that area. She wants to go to the gym everyday after school, but driving there 5 days a week is pretty consuming and I also have baseball for my son Tyler.   Kamryn strives to be the best gymnast she can be and loves having Jan, Cisco and Mike as coaches.  You all do a great job with her and push her enough to make her a better gymnast.  She says she never wants to quit gymnastics and wants to own her own gym someday and be a coach.

Kamryn is currently competing in the girls 9-10 division on level 5.  Being only 8 years old, she does an amazing job competing against girls 1-2 years older than her and beating them all season.

(Regarding gymnastics) The sport helps build strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Its all-around fitness benefits make it a good springboard to other activities. “Whatever any other sport can throw at them, they are going to be better prepared if they were gymnasts,” Penny says.

Participating in gymnastics can teach a child self discipline, self confidence and teamwork in addition to building their coordination and physique. Children in gymnastics learn to recognize a goal and then follow through with the practice and determination to bring that goal to fruition.

The Non-physical benefits of gymnastics:
“1.Cognitive Benefits: When children are engaging in gymnastics, they are exercising their brains as well as their bodies. New research suggests a strong correlation between physically fit children and academic achievement. Every time you send your child to gymnastics class, he/she is engaging in physical exercise that encourages healthy brain function. Nerve cells multiply and connections in the brain are strengthened. It is not surprising that children who are engaging in consistent physical activity like gymnastics are more likely to get better grades than their inactive peers.
2.Social Skills: Children can also benefit socially from engaging in gymnastics. Aside from simply interacting with other children in the class, some gymnastics clubs also encourage teamwork and partner drills in their classes. The more children can interact with different types of children both in school and in after-school programming, the more they will learn how to handle conflict and positively relate to others.
3.Reduced Risky Behavior: Gymnastics clubs can provide a stable, reliable physical activity source for both children and teens. Young people who are consistently physically active are much less likely to engage in using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs. When children can find positive, active ways to keep busy in a place that you can trust, they will not have to make up ways to occupy their time that could lead to poor or risky choices.
4.Confidence: Instructors at gymnastics clubs using a supportive, mastery oriented approach can help their budding athletes develop a wonderful sense of confidence. While physical activity tends to reduce feelings of depression and anxiety, the right instructors help children develop an “I can” attitude that can give them that intangible high of knowing they can count on themselves to succeed.
